Out of State Drivers Charged With DWI In New Jersey

Too many times, out of state drivers charged with DWI in New Jersey disregard the charges thinking it will only affect their driving privileges in New Jersey. That is only partially correct. If you are an out of state driver and you are convicted of DWI in New Jersey, the state of New Jersey can only suspend your driving privileges here, not in your home state.

HOWEVER , ‘The Interstate Compact’ requires that all states report any moving violations received by a motorist to the state where their license was issued (most likely your home state). The state that issued your license can decide to take action against you and in most cases they will.

Out of state drivers charged with DWI in New Jersey risk losing their driving privileges and facing fines from two states, NJ and their home state. Your best bet would be to enlist a defense attorney to help you avoid these consequences altogether.
